“Treat those who are good with goodness, and also treat those who are not good with goodness. Thus goodness is attained. Be honest to those who are honest, and be also honest to those who are not honest. Thus honesty is attained.”
— Lao Tzu
There is a great temptation to treat others based on how they treat us. They treat us well, we treat them well. They don’t say hi, well then, we won’t either.
We think that in this way we’re “showing so-and-so they can’t treat us like…”
But in reality, we are robbing ourselves of our power to choose how we want to be. And that’s not something to be taken lightly.
Understand that I am not suggesting you allow people to treat you poorly, or stay in relationships where you are mistreated. In fact, sometimes you just have to walk away from some people whose beliefs are so toxic that it’s not healthy for you to interact with them.
You have every right to walk away from those situations and distance yourself from those people. Just don’t let them influence how and who you choose to be.
Today, remember to treat people the way you believe people should be treated regardless of how they are to you.
When you walk away from people who mistreat you, but are true to the love and kindness that is inside you, you’ll find that wonderful people will come and take their place in your life.
